About Laptops.computer
Laptops.computer is an AI-era hardware discovery engine. We rank laptops by what you actually do — coding, local LLMs, creative work, travel, gaming, business — using NPU TOPS, memory bandwidth, tokens/sec, and thermal sustain rather than marketing specs. We built the site for two audiences at once: human buyers, and the AI agents that increasingly do the buying for them.

How we test
Every ranking on this site traces back to a repeatable measurement. Our five-step methodology:
1. Chip-class baselines, then per-model testing
We start from vendor-published silicon specs (NPU TOPS, core counts, memory controllers) and validate them against our simulated benchmark profiles based on chip-class data. Every laptop card on the site carries the same disclosure.
2. Local LLM throughput
We measure tokens/sec on quantized GGUF models (8B, 14B, 32B, 70B at Q4–Q8) with fixed prompts and context lengths, and report memory bandwidth alongside — because generation speed is bandwidth-bound, not TOPS-bound.
3. Sustained NPU load and thermals
A TOPS number means little if the NPU throttles after five minutes. We score thermal sustain (0–100) on long-running AI workloads, where the machine has to keep its clock, not sprint.
4. Battery under AI load
We test battery life during on-device AI work, not just video playback — the scenario where an NPU's efficiency advantage actually shows up.
5. Workload weighting, not a single score
Every laptop is ranked per workload (coding, local LLM, creative, travel, gaming, business, students) using our published workload-fit weights. A gaming laptop and a travel laptop are never compared on one number.
The full weighting model lives on the workload-fit methodology page, and raw chip-class comparisons on the benchmarks page.
Editorial independence
- Rankings are determined by our testing and workload weights before any commercial consideration. No brand can pay for placement, and we do not accept "sponsored reviews."
- We earn through affiliate commissions when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. That never changes which laptops rank — only whether a purchase link exists at all.
- When our figures are simulated chip-class profiles rather than per-unit lab runs, we say so on the page. We do not present estimates as measurements.
- Claims from vendors are labeled as vendor claims. Where data is missing, we say "unknown" rather than guess.

Laptops.computer is produced by a small desk of named hardware analysts, each owning the beat they test:
Mara Ellison
Silicon & Chips Editor
Beat: Snapdragon X2, Intel Core Ultra X9, AMD Ryzen AI 400, Apple M5
Mara covers the 2026 chip race and translates vendor TOPS claims into comparable, same-precision numbers. She owns the AI PC roadmap and chip timelines page, and every chip-class aggregate in the open benchmark dataset passes through her normalization pass before it ships.
Devon Okafor
Local LLM Inference Editor
Beat: llama.cpp, MLX, quantization, VRAM & KV-cache math
Devon owns our tokens/sec, VRAM, and quantization testing — including the Local LLM & AI VRAM calculator. Every model-fit claim on the site (8B to 70B, Q4 to Q8) is run through llama.cpp and MLX on the actual memory-bandwidth class before he signs it off.
Priya Raman
Battery & Thermals Editor
Beat: Sustained NPU load, thermal retention, battery under AI load
Priya runs sustained-load and battery-under-AI-load testing. Her 15-minute retention runs are why thin-and-light machines that throttle their NPU in the first ten minutes never make our top picks — no matter how good the spec sheet looks.
Jonas Beckett
Buying Guides Editor
Beat: Workload-fit rankings, per-buyer guides, decision trees
Jonas maintains the workload-fit rankings, the per-buyer guides, and the decision trees. His rule for every recommendation: it must answer 'best for what?' instead of 'best, full stop' — and the answer has to survive contact with the benchmark dataset.
The discovery network
Laptops.computer is part of the AI.commerce.computer Discovery Layer — a network of 18 interconnected marketplaces enabling AI agents to discover, compare, and purchase technology products, including AIPC.computer, Desktops.computer, Chip.computer, and EdgeAI.computer. Structured, machine-readable data is a first-class output here: every ranking ships with schema.org markup, visible dates, and quotable claims so AI answer engines can cite us accurately.
Contact & corrections
Found an error in a spec, a benchmark, or a ranking? Corrections matter more to us than traffic. Reach the desk via LinkedIn — we fix verified errors on the page and note the correction date.
